Mankato East Tonight: The Impact of Cyber Bullying

(Mankato, MN) – Social media and bullying are the focus of a family engagement discussion set for tonight at Mankato East High School.

School officials say the presentation will review the types of social media that students are using and the impact of cyber bullying.

National statistics show that more than a third of students acknowledge that they have experienced cyberbullying, including the spreading of rumors, and hurtful comments about their looks, race or religion, and sexuality.

Tonight’s family engagement night at Mankato East will start at 5:45 in the media center.

The issue of bullying at schools vaulted into the spotlight locally last December when a video of a teen girl being hit and punched at East went viral.

The victim, who was taken to the ER after exhibiting signs of a concussion, no longer attends East.

The district said it took action against the 14-year-old attacker, but didn’t say exactly what that entailed and because of her age, it’s unclear what, if any, legal actions were taken by the courts.
