(New Ulm, MN) – A group of anglers in the New Ulm area had an unexpected and furry visitor join them this past week, not once, but twice.
DNR Conservation Officer Thor Nelson says he spoke with some grandparents who had taken their young grandsons to do some catfishing.
They were trying their luck with some stink bait and had an open container next to them on shore, when a short-tail weasel approached within 3 to 4 feet of one of the kids and helped itself to the odorous cuisine.
And Nelson says apparently that stink bait was dang delicious…because shortly after, the weasel returned for seconds.
Now, most of the DNR’s efforts across southern Minnesota in recent days focused on Operation Dry Water, aimed at cracking down on drunk boat drivers. Reports from conservation officers say that the vast majority of boaters on area lakes did plan ahead and had a sober operator, although there were some violations noted as well.
