Three area counties reported COVID-19 deaths Monday as the Minnesota Department of Health released its first numbers of 2022.

Monday’s update is for data received by MDH as of Thursday, December 30 at 4 a.m.  There was no reporting on Friday or over the weekend; those numbers will be reflected in Tuesday’s report.

MDH reported 48 total deaths in Monday’s daily update, which included the death of a person in their early 60’s in Freeborn County.  A person in their late 60’s also died in Le Sueur County.  Faribault County reported the death of a person in their 90’s.  Minnesota’s total deaths rose to 10,564 Monday.

Another 6,780 new infections were recorded in the state Monday as the Omicron variant spreads rapidly through the country.  Blue Earth County logged 26 new cases, while Nicollet County had 16.
