Department of Public Safety: Speed-related deaths highest in a decade

(St. Paul, MN) – Speed-related deaths in 2018 were the highest in a decade.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety says 113 motorists died on Minnesota roads in 2018 in speed-related crashes, the first year since 2008 that fateful number has climbed above 100.  There were 25 fewer deaths caused by speed the previous year.

To help lower that number, DPS says that officers, deputies, and troopers will work overtime between June 18th and July 21st.  More than 300 agencies will participate in the speed campaign coordinated by DPS.

Preliminary numbers show that 30 of the 2018 speed-related fatalities happened during the 100 deadliest days, which is what DPS calls the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
