Fairfax Intermediate School will close

(Gibbon, MN) – The Fairfax Intermediate School will close.

On Friday, the Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop School Board voted 4-2 to close the school as part of a three-year plan to get out of statutory operating debt.  It was the second vote the board had taken on the closure; the previous Monday, the result was a 3-3 deadlocked vote.

Students will remain in Fairfax through the end of the school year. In fall, fourth and fifth-graders will attend the Gibbon elementary school, while sixth graders will attend school in Winthrop.

The school closure is estimated to save the district $621,000 over the next three years.
