(Mankato, MN) – Wisconsin-based retailer Shopko will close 38 more stores, five of them in Minnesota.

The news comes on the heels of the announcement that the company had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, citing excessive debt and competitive pressure.   Just last month, the retailer said it would close about 40 of its 300-plus stores around the company.

The Mankato Shopko survived the first round of closures but announced just weeks later that the store’s pharmacy operations had been sold to Hy-Vee.  Mankato, St. James, and St. Peter Shopko locations were spared from this latest round of closures, but the Fairmont store will close.  Shopko says the optical shop in Fairmont will transition to a free-standing location.
