Fire destroys Waseca County recycling facility

(Waseca, MN) –  Officials say Waseca Solid Waste and Recycling off Highway 13 was destroyed by a fire this morning.

The fire was still smoldering south of Waseca and crews on the scene said Jessica Beyer, Waseca County Administrator, when SMN spoke to her at 4 p.m. Wednesday via phone.  Beyer said the fire was reported at 7:18 a.m., shortly after employees had arrived for their shifts.  Everyone was safely evacuated and no injuries were reported.

Beyer said crews were on the scene to monitor the smoldering structures and investigate.  She said she didn’t yet have an estimate of the damages, but stressed that the facility had been destroyed.

The Waseca Fire Department was assisted by the New Richland, Janesville, Ellendale, and Owatonna fire departments, the Waseca County Sheriff, and MnDOT.

The Waseca Fire Department and state fire marshal are investigation the cause of the fire.  The facility will be closed until further notice.
