(New Ulm, MN) – A popular religious landmark in New Ulm has been vandalized.

New Ulm Police have confirmed that the chapel at the Way of the Cross fell victim to vandals who painted graffiti on the walls inside of the quaint chapel, which is serenely tucked in a peaceful wooded area.

Cpl. Aaron Widmark with NUPD said police also received a previous report of a damaged fence at the popular destination.  He said the department hadn’t been notified of any other incidents that have reportedly happened, including benches being tipped over and water left to run for hours.

Damages are estimated at just under $500.

According to the city’s Chamber of Commerce page, the Way of the Cross is a “reflective walk up a gentle incline to a chapel dedicated to the Mother of Sorrows.”  The Way of the Cross was completed in 1904.  The landmark is located on 5th North Street behind the New Ulm Medical Center.
