Olivia police officer fatally shoots armed person

An armed person was shot and killed by a police officer in Olivia early Sunday morning.

According to Olivia City Administrator Dan Coughlin, at about 2:20 a.m. on July 4, an Olivia police officer on patrol was confronted by an armed person in an alley on the 800 block of Lincoln Avenue / Highway 212. The officer and the other person had a physical altercation, during which the other person was shot. The individual was taken to the hospital in Olivia, and declared dead.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the shooting, and the officer has been placed on standard administrative leave.
