(Mankato, MN) – The message seems to be getting through to motorists.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety reports that the the 2019 Click It or Ticket Campaign handed out a record-low number of citations during its two-week run.

It was the fifth straight year that citation numbers dropped.

During the extra enforcement wave, 327 agencies reported 4,649 seat belt citations and 141 child seat violations.  That’s down over 2,000 citations from just a year ago.

In the Mankato State Patrol District, the DPS says there were 134 citations issued.

Between 2004-2008, the years leading up to the primary seat belt law, 51% of fatalities were known to be unbelted motorists, according to the DPS.  That number decreased to 34% between 2014 and 2018/
