Salvation Army Kicks Off Red Kettle Campaign
MANKATO, MN – With Thanksgiving still a few weeks away, many are already looking ahead to the holiday season.
The Salvation Army launched its 2024 Red Kettle Campaign on Wednesday and is working to fill volunteer spots for bell ringing throughout the season. Around 3,000 hours of bell ringing are needed across locations like Hy-Vee, Cub Foods, Fleet Farm, Sam’s Club, and River Hills Mall.
“We want to see all our slots filled,” said Captain Andy Wheeler of the Mankato Salvation Army. “We make nearly 400% more when there’s someone at the kettle ringing bells, greeting people, and spreading cheer.”
The campaign goal remains $525,000, the same as in recent years. Although the goal hasn’t changed, the Salvation Army has struggled to reach it in previous seasons. This year, they’re hopeful, as the big red kettle at River Hills Mall has already raised $50,000 before bell ringing even begins.
A core group of dedicated bell ringers returns each year, believing the volunteer hours are meaningful.
“It’s a lot of fun! Sure, your hand might get a little sore, but it’s for a good cause, and all the money goes back to help the community,” one volunteer shared.
Bell ringing will begin on November 22 and continue through Christmas.
