Search for missing Sleepy Eye man suspended

(Sleepy Eye, MN) – The Brown County Sheriff says that rising river waters and dangerous currents have forced them to suspend the search for a missing Sleepy Eye man.

Seventy-three-year-old Vincent Mathiowetz was reported missing by his family on June 3.

The sheriff’s office says that the Cottonwood River has risen 6 1/2 feet in the past four days and boat navigation is nearly impossible.

Search and recovery efforts will resume when the river is safer for personnel.

Heavy rains have hampered attempts to locate Mathiowetz since the search begain.  He is suspected to be in the Cottonwood River after K-9 dogs gave strong indicators.  Mathiowetz’s family reported that he had recently shown signs of depression.
