A South Dakota man was killed in an accident between his vehicle and a school bus on Interstate 90 in Faribault County Saturday evening.

The Minnesota State Patrol reported that a 2016 school bus being driven by 79-year old Charles Edward Cone of Waseca was traveling eastbound on Interstate 90 at approximately 8:42 p.m. Saturday evening when his vehicle collided near the Highway 22 exit with a 2006 Ford Mustang being driven by 55-year old Mark Alan Tigner of Brandon, South Dakota, which was westbound on Interstate 90 at the time of the crash.

Tigner was killed in the accident, while seven female passengers on the bus between the ages of 14 and 16, all members of the Waseca volleyball team returning from an away game sustained non-life threatening injuries in the accident, and they were all transported to Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Albert Lea for treatment.  Cone and an eighth passenger on the school bus, 24-year-old Kelsey Jo Kahnke of Waseca were both uninjured.

The State Patrol indicated that both Tigner and Cone were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident, and they added that it was unknown at this time as to whether alcohol was involved in the accident concerning Tigner.  The Faribault County Sheriff’s Office, ambulances from Wells, Kiester, and Bricelyn, Wells Fire and Police, The Kiester Fire Department, and Bricelyn Police all assisted the State Patrol at the accident scene Saturday evening.
