(St. Peter, MN) – A high speed chase in Nicollet County that led to the discovery of a stolen vehicle and drugs has resulted in criminal charges for a Coon Rapids man.
Forty-one-year-old Matthew Thomas Gage of Coon Rapids is charged in Nicollet County Court with felony counts of fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle and receiving stolen property.
According to the criminal complaint, just before 7:30 Monday morning, Gage was found sleeping in a vehicle near 490th Street -about a mile south of Highway 14 – when sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a possible abandoned vehicle. He left the scene at a high rate of speed after telling the deputy he was going to retrieve his identification from the trunk.
Gage ran a stop sign on Highway 14, then led deputies on a pursuit with speeds reaching over 100 miles per hour. The chase went past Nicollet and through Courtland before deputies were able to block the roadway and stop the vehicle, according to court documents.
The vehicle Gage was driving was reported stolen out of Isanti County. Inside, police found multiple license plates and cell phones, wads of cash, and checks from various businesses written out to multiple names. Two substances, believed to be marijuana and psilocybin mushrooms were also found. Deputies also located a bolt cutter.
