(Deerfield, IL) – Walgreens will shutter 200 stores in the United States in an effort to cut costs.

The Deerfield, Illinois-base pharmacy giant says the closures account for less than 3% of the 10,000 stores located across the U.S.  The company announced earlier this year its plans to shutter 200 U.K. stores.

The closures are an effort to trim expenses by $1.5 billion by 2022.  The company said a majority of the employees would be retained at nearby stores.

A complete list of store closures will not be released at this time.
